Grey Hair Solutions: Why Grey Blending Is a Journey, Not Just One Appointment

What to expect when you're ready for a softer, lower-maintenance relationship with your hair
“I’m so tired of coloring my roots... but I’m not ready to be grey.”
Oh my gosh, I know exactly how you feel—and you are definitely not alone. I work with women who feel exactly this way every day behind the chair.
Maybe you're tired of seeing that obvious regrowth just a few weeks after having your color done. You're tired of planning appointments around your roots. But the alternative feels like going from 100% grey coverage to suddenly embracing every natural grey hair you have—and you're thinking, Absolutely not. I'm going to look like my grandma. 😂
Here's the good news:
Those aren't your only two choices.
If you've been searching for grey hair solutions that don't involve completely covering every grey every few weeks—or growing your color out completely—there's a whole world in between.
Somewhere in that middle ground may be exactly the amount of coverage, dimension and maintenance that feels right for you.
That's where grey blending comes in.
Not sure exactly what grey blending means? Start with my post, “What Is Grey Blending and Is It Right for Me?”
But there's something I really want my clients to understand before we start:
Grey blending is often a journey—not a single appointment.
And your journey isn't going to look exactly like anyone else's.
When Your Hair Appointment Starts Feeling Like Another Obligation
There was probably a time when getting your hair done felt fun. You looked forward to it. A couple of hours to yourself, fresh color, good conversation, maybe a little pampering...
But somewhere along the way, that appointment every four weeks stopped feeling like a treat and started feeling like another meeting that could've been an email. 😂
You're moving lunch plans around. Checking your calendar before you leave the salon because you already know those roots will be announcing themselves again soon. Maybe you're touching them up at home between appointments or choosing hairstyles based on which one hides them best.
Your hair has somehow become another thing you have to manage.
And that is often the point when women start asking me about grey blending.
The goal isn't necessarily to make you greyer.
The goal is to give you a softer relationship with the grey you already have.
That might mean allowing some of it to show. It might mean changing the way we cover it. It might mean adjusting your overall color so your natural hair doesn't feel so obvious as it grows.
Ultimately, we're working toward hair that fits into your life instead of making your life fit around your hair.
So... What Does the Grey Blending Transition Actually Look Like?
This is where I want to set some realistic expectations, because Instagram loves a beautiful before-and-after photo. What you don't always see is everything that happened between those two pictures.
Your first transitional appointment may be one of our longest and most involved sessions together.
We're going to talk—a lot.
I want to know what you love about your current hair, what you're tired of, how often you're realistically willing to visit the salon, how much of your natural grey you're comfortable seeing and what your long-term goal actually looks like.
Depending on your color history, I may also need to perform test strands before deciding what your hair can safely handle.
We may need to lighten certain areas, soften old color or start introducing dimension differently. Or we may decide that a much simpler change is enough to start moving you in the right direction.
There isn't one grey-blending technique that works for everyone.
Your natural grey pattern, existing color, hair condition, lifestyle, comfort level and long-term goals all play a part in creating your plan.
Sometimes We Have to Give a Little to Get a Lot
This may be the hardest part of transitioning to grey blending for some women.
If you've spent years making sure you never see a grey hair, suddenly seeing some of it can feel strange.
Your overall color might need to shift a little. You may see more natural regrowth than you're accustomed to. There may be a stage where your hair simply feels different because we're no longer trying to make every single strand the exact same color.
Sometimes we have to make a small sacrifice now to get the lower-maintenance hair we want later.
And I want you to know that before we start—not after.
We'll talk through those possibilities together so you understand what we're doing, why we're doing it and where we're headed.
I'm never going to tell you that you have to embrace all of your grey. You don't.
But if your goal is to stop fighting it every few weeks, we may need to start letting your natural hair become part of the plan instead of something we're constantly trying to erase.
Please Don't Judge Grey Blending After Appointment One
This is something I talk about with my grey-blending clients before we begin.
I want you to commit to the process for a few consecutive sessions.
Not because I'm trying to lock you into appointments. 😂 It's because we need to give the plan enough time to actually work.
At your first appointment, I'm working with the hair that's sitting in my chair that day—including whatever color history we're starting with.
Then you go live your life.
Your hair grows. Your natural grey starts coming back in. You wash and style it at home. You experience your first grow-out with the changes we've made.
And when you come back, we learn from it.
Maybe we loved everything about it. Maybe you were comfortable seeing more grey than you thought you'd be. Maybe one area still felt too obvious and we need to soften it more. Maybe we decide you're ready to take the next step.
Each appointment gives us more information and gets us closer to the balance that works for you.
And Then Something Pretty Great Starts to Happen...
You stop thinking about your roots quite so much.
That hard line of regrowth starts feeling softer. You aren't counting down the days until your next appointment. Maybe your salon visits begin stretching farther apart.
And when you do come in, your appointment can start feeling like something you chose to do again—not something your roots forced you to do.
That's the win.
Grey blending isn't about convincing every woman to embrace all of her grey. And it's definitely not about making you look or feel older.
It's about giving you options.
Maybe you eventually decide you love seeing more of your natural grey. Maybe you don't. Maybe your perfect balance lives somewhere comfortably in the middle for years.
There is no right amount of grey to have. There's only the amount that feels right for you.
My job is to listen, educate you about what's possible, protect the health of your hair and create a custom plan that gets you as close as we safely can to the maintenance and look you want.
Ready for a Different Relationship With Your Hair?
If you're exhausted by the constant cycle of covering your roots but aren't ready to simply stop coloring your hair, you don't have to choose between the two.
There's a whole lot of beautiful space in the middle.
Grey blending may take some patience, flexibility and commitment during the transition—but on the other side can be softer grow-out, more freedom between appointments and hair that works with your life instead of running it.

Because ultimately, that's what grey blending is really about. ❤️
